Providence – School One, the independent high school for independent minds, has welcomed Ulli K. Ryder, Ph.D., to its Board of Directors. Dr. Ryder, a 1990 graduate, is an award-winning educator, consultant, writer, editor and thinker. Her consulting company, the Ryder | Talbutt Group, helps organizations improve communication, operate with empathy, and reduce and repair harm.
“I can honestly say that without School One I would not have finished high school. When I found School One, I found a community and was able to thrive. I credit the school with setting the foundation for everything I’ve done since,” Dr. Ryder said. “I’m thrilled to be able to join the Board at School One. It is one small way that I can give back to the school that gave me so much. I look forward to working with everyone to continue the great tradition of quality education plus a welcoming and caring community that School One is rightly proud of.”
Dr. Ryder’s expertise has been sought by institutions such as the University of Southern California (USC), University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), Yale University, Harvard University, the Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University. She has been a Scholar-in-Residence in the Office of the Chaplains at Brown University since 2012. She regularly teaches courses in Gender & Women’s Studies and U.S. History at the University of Rhode Island.
“Dr. Ryder brings experience as a School One alum and a vast amount of expertise that will really complement our current Board,” said Board President, Douglass Boone. “Her strategic thinking, her experience as a teacher, and her understanding of working with diversity and the media, among other talents, will help our Board improve its oversight of School One’s success.”
Dr. Ryder has contributed to media outlets such as WGBH Boston, MSNBC, The New York Times, and HuffPost. She is the editor (with Marcia A. Dawkins, Ph.D.) of Mixed Race 3.0: Risk and Reward in the Digital Age (Annenberg Press, 2015). In addition to consulting, writing, and teaching, she is a former member of the Commission for Health Advocacy and Equity with the RI Department of Health. Currently she serves on the Advisory Board for Project Open Door (RISD) and is leading the effort to restore the grave of Rhode Island artist Edward M. Bannister.
Dr. Ryder earned her Ph.D. in American Studies & Ethnicity from USC. She also holds a Master of Professional Writing (USC), a Master of Afro-American Studies (UCLA) and BA from Simmons University in English and African American Studies.
School One, located on the East Side of Providence, offers an average of nine students per class and real-world learning opportunities with an eye toward college admission. The School’s caring, safe environment allows students to grow to meet their own potential through interdisciplinary education and extra attention from faculty. School One offers more arts, music, and writing classes than many high schools and an Arts Pathway for those who wish to pursue additional learning in the arts and/or seek to attend an arts college.
